The gardener – 1913

Jenny painted The Gardener (1913) so to speak in the backyard of her house ‘Rustoord’ in the Mortelstraat in Deurle. There were the begonia fields of the family Coryn. To grow flower seed, the flowers must bloom until they are ‘in seed’. As a result, her home was surrounded for months by a colorful sea of flowers. In a private collection we found one of the ‘croquis’ – the sketches (oil on cardboard) of this work, a beautiful little gem (image below). In her studio came the monumental work to life, that was purchased by the Museum for beautiful art (MSK) in Ghent, partly on the advice of Emile Claus.
